Hebrew, Aramaic & Semitic Language Resources

HEBREW, ARAMAIC & SEMITIC LANGUAGE RESOURCES

The languages of Scripture did not develop in isolation. Biblical Hebrew belongs to the Northwest Semitic linguistic world, while Aramaic appears within the biblical text itself and became a major language of Jewish literature and the broader Near East. Related Semitic languages, inscriptions, dialects, and textual traditions therefore provide important comparative evidence for examining vocabulary, grammar, syntax, idiom, names, and historical usage.

This collection provides access to linguistic databases, textual corpora, inscriptional evidence, morphological resources, and scholarly reference projects for Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, and related Semitic languages. Particular attention is given to resources that allow the underlying linguistic evidence to be examined directly rather than reducing language study to English glosses or isolated dictionary definitions.

Comparative evidence must nevertheless be used with discipline. A cognate in a related Semitic language does not automatically determine the meaning of a Hebrew or Aramaic word; a later usage does not by itself establish an earlier meaning; and etymological relationship is not equivalent to contextual equivalence. Lexical and grammatical claims must therefore be tested against chronology, dialect, textual context, attested usage, and the character of the evidence being compared.

The purpose of this collection is to make that linguistic evidence accessible for disciplined examination of the language of Scripture and its historical Semitic environment.
