GREEK & SEPTUAGINT RESOURCES

The Greek textual tradition occupies a critical position in the documentary history of Scripture. The Septuagint and other ancient Greek translations preserve witnesses to Hebrew Scriptures that sometimes agree closely with the later Masoretic tradition and sometimes reflect different readings, translation techniques, textual forms, or interpretive decisions. Greek also became the language of the Apostolic Writings and much of the earliest surviving literature concerning the apostolic movement.

This collection provides access to Greek biblical texts, Septuagint manuscripts, critical-edition projects, aligned Hebrew-Greek corpora, morphological resources, ancient Jewish Greek revisions, scholarly translations, and research organizations devoted to the study of the Greek Scriptures. Particular attention is given to resources that permit comparison between the Greek evidence and the underlying Hebrew or Aramaic traditions.

Greek evidence must nevertheless be classified carefully. A manuscript is not identical to a reconstructed critical text; a critical edition is not itself an ancient manuscript; an English translation of the Septuagint is not the Greek Septuagint; and agreement between a Greek reading and a particular Hebrew reading does not by itself establish which textual form is earlier. Translation technique, manuscript date, textual history, recensional activity, and the possibility of a different Hebrew Vorlage must all be considered.

The purpose of this collection is therefore not to elevate one textual tradition automatically above another, but to provide the evidence necessary to examine how the Greek Scriptures were translated, transmitted, revised, cited, and received.
