Archaeology, Geography & Ancient History

ARCHAEOLOGY, GEOGRAPHY & ANCIENT HISTORY

Archaeology, historical geography, inscriptions, settlement surveys, material remains, and ancient topography provide an independent body of evidence for reconstructing the worlds described in biblical and apostolic texts. Excavated cities, fortifications, pottery, coins, seals, inscriptions, burial practices, roads, temples, domestic architecture, administrative records, and landscape evidence can illuminate political boundaries, chronology, cultural practice, trade, warfare, religious activity, and patterns of human settlement.

This collection provides access to archaeological institutions, excavation archives, geographical databases, museum collections, epigraphic resources, site reports, and scholarly publications concerned with the ancient Near East, Israel and Judah, Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Levant, and the wider Mediterranean world. These resources allow historical claims to be compared with physical evidence and reconstructed geographical settings rather than examined solely through later literary descriptions.

Material evidence must nevertheless be interpreted according to what it can actually establish. An inscription may identify a ruler or place without confirming every narrative associated with that person or location; a destruction layer may establish violent destruction without independently identifying its cause; and the absence of an artifact or structure does not necessarily demonstrate that a reported event or institution never existed. Preservation, excavation coverage, stratigraphy, dating methodology, provenance, site identification, and competing interpretations must therefore be considered.

The purpose of this collection is not to use archaeology as a substitute for textual evidence or to force material remains into predetermined conclusions, but to make the physical and geographical record available for comparison. Text, inscription, artifact, site, chronology, and landscape should be allowed to function as distinct witnesses whose agreements and tensions can be examined together.
