DEAD SEA SCROLLS & SECOND TEMPLE JUDAISM
The Dead Sea Scrolls and the broader literature of the Second Temple period provide an essential documentary context for examining the world in which the Apostolic Writings emerged. These sources preserve biblical manuscripts, sectarian regulations, legal interpretations, apocalyptic expectations, prayers, commentaries, community rules, historical testimony, and other Jewish writings from the centuries surrounding the life of Yahshua and the earliest apostolic movement.
This collection provides access to manuscript images, transcriptions, translations, archaeological documentation, scholarly databases, and major Jewish authors of the period. Particular attention is given to sources that permit direct examination of the evidence rather than relying solely upon later descriptions of Second Temple Judaism. The Dead Sea Scrolls themselves range from biblical manuscripts to previously known noncanonical works and writings apparently associated with particular Jewish communities.
These materials must nevertheless be classified carefully. A text found near Qumran is not automatically representative of all Jews; a sectarian rule does not establish universal Jewish practice; Josephus, Philo, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and later rabbinic literature represent different authors, communities, dates, purposes, and social settings. Similarity between a Second Temple expression and language in the Apostolic Writings may demonstrate shared cultural or interpretive vocabulary without proving direct dependence.
The purpose of this collection is therefore to reconstruct the historical and intellectual environment of the period from multiple witnesses, allowing claims about Torah, covenant, purity, messianism, resurrection, eschatology, sectarian identity, and Jewish practice to be tested against the documentary record.
