CLASSICAL GREEK & ROMAN SOURCES
The biblical and apostolic writings emerged within political, social, linguistic, legal, and cultural environments shaped in significant part by the Greek and Roman worlds. Classical historians, inscriptions, administrative documents, geographical sources, literary texts, legal materials, and archaeological records therefore provide an important external body of evidence for examining the historical setting in which biblical events and the apostolic movement occurred.
This collection provides access to major Greek and Latin literary corpora, inscriptions, papyri, historical source collections, geographical databases, Roman legal materials, and scholarly repositories. These resources allow claims concerning rulers, cities, provincial administration, citizenship, military activity, religion, public institutions, language, travel, chronology, and social practice to be compared with evidence outside explicitly Jewish or Christian texts.
Such evidence must nevertheless be classified according to its character. An inscription produced contemporaneously with an event differs evidentially from a historian writing generations later; a literary work is not equivalent to an administrative document; a geographical database is a modern research tool rather than an ancient witness; and a surviving manuscript copy may transmit a much earlier composition. Ancient authors must therefore be evaluated according to date, genre, purpose, sources, proximity to the events described, and corroboration from independent evidence.
The purpose of this collection is therefore not to treat Greek and Roman literature as an unquestioned external authority, but to make the wider documentary environment available for disciplined historical comparison. Literary testimony, inscriptions, law, geography, papyri, and material evidence can then be weighed according to their proper evidentiary function.
