Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha & Noncanonical Literature

BIBLICAL APOCRYPHA, PSEUDEPIGRAPHA & NONCANONICAL LITERATURE

Ancient Jewish and Christian literature extends far beyond the writings eventually included within the biblical canons. Apocrypha, pseudepigrapha, apocalypses, rewritten biblical narratives, wisdom texts, testaments, additional psalms, noncanonical gospels, acts, epistles, and other writings preserve important evidence concerning the religious and intellectual environments in which Judaism and the apostolic movement developed.

This collection provides access to significant Jewish and Christian noncanonical writings together with manuscript evidence, critical texts, translations, and scholarly research tools. Particular attention is given to works such as 1 Enoch, Jubilees, Ben Sira, the Maccabean literature, the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, and later Christian apocrypha because these materials illuminate ancient discussions of Torah, covenant, wisdom, angels, evil, resurrection, judgment, messianism, eschatology, scriptural interpretation, and the identities of Israel and the emerging Christian communities.

Canonical status, historical value, and theological authority are separate questions. The presence of a work outside a particular biblical canon does not make it historically worthless, just as the antiquity or popularity of a work does not establish scriptural authority. Attribution must likewise be distinguished from composition: a text presented in the name of Enoch, Abraham, Moses, a patriarch, or an apostle is not thereby demonstrated to have been written by that person. Composition date, manuscript date, language, textual transmission, provenance, literary development, and reception must therefore be examined independently.

The purpose of this collection is neither to enlarge the biblical canon nor to dismiss literature outside it, but to make these writings available as historically situated witnesses. Parallels between a noncanonical work and Scripture may reveal shared language, interpretive traditions, or a common historical environment without by themselves establishing literary dependence or equal authority. These sources should therefore be examined according to what they can actually demonstrate.
